It’s a day to pause. A day to remember the sacrifices that have been made so we could live in freedom. A day to honor those who gave their lives fighting for liberty.
And it’s a day Chicago takes very seriously.
Chicago’s Memorial Day Parade, Wreath Laying Ceremony
Chicago's Memorial Day Parade honors all men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country.
The Wreath Laying Ceremony will begin at 11am on Daley Plaza (Dearborn and Washington Streets). The parade will then step off at noon and proceed south on State Street from Lake Street to Van Buren Street.
During the Wreath Laying Ceremony and Parade, the City of Chicago honors fallen heroes and Gold Star family members who have lost a loved one in the United States Armed Forces to combat operations or while on active duty.
Enjoy live music, block parties throughout the city
Elsewhere in Chicago, there will be special events throughout the holiday weekend.
Here are a few of our favorites that also happen to be free:
Neighboring breweries, Begyle and Dovetail, are co-hosting Mayfestiversary, a two-day event featuring food from DönerMen and Paulina Meat Market, live music and locally produced beer. The free event is from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27, at Begyle Brewing Company, 1800 W. Cuyler Ave.
Live music is also something to look forward to, as well as a “professional” wrestling exhibition at Mole de Mayo, a street festival near Ashland and 18th Street. Local chefs will be cooking up dishes that incorporate the undeniably beautiful combination of hot chilis and chocolate from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, May 25 and noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27. In addition to the live music and wrestling, local vendors will be on hand offering the best in local goods and services.
DJs will team up to set the scene the Chicago House Music Festival at Millennium Park, 201 E. Randolph Street, from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 26.
Classic rides will line fill the high school parking lot, as Lane Tech hosts its annual Memorial Day carnival. The event is free, but rides like the Ferris wheel, Tilt-A-Whirl, and the Zipper will require tickets for admission. Enjoy the carnival from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, May 25, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27, and noon to 8 p.m. Monday, May 28 at Lane Tech College Prep High School, 2501 W. Addison Street.
