All Things Fall: What You Don’t Want to Miss in Chicago this Season

  |     |   Lifestyle

It doesn’t matter whether you prefer apple spice or pumpkin spice. Fall has arrived, in all of it’s apple-picking, pumpkin farming, costume toting glory.

And there is something for everyone to love in and around Chicago this fall. Here are a few ideas for some fun things to do with the family to celebrate fall:

Explore the Great Outdoors

There are all sorts of ways to explore the great outdoors before fall gives way to winter and leaves give way to snow. Apple picking is one way to get outside and enjoy the sound of leaves crunching under your feet as you sift through for the perfectly ripe apples. County Line Orchard and All Seasons Apple Orchard are a short drive away and both also feature corn mazes and other fall activities, including pumpkin picking as well. Have Fun on the Farm

Anyone looking for some fresh fall goodness in the suburbs can check out one of a handful of nearby farms. Richardson Adventure Farm reportedly has the “world’s largest,” most intricate corn maze. It’s an hour and a half outside the city, but it’s a drive well worth taking for many people this time of year. Siegel’s Cottonwood Farm is another family favorite, offering a Cub’s-themed corn maze that has been in the works since the World Series win in 2016.

Tour the area’s best fall foliage spots

From the Chicago Botanic Garden to the Morton Arboretum, there are some amazing places to see the fall colors throughout the area.  The botanic garden’s visitor center features a lot to see throughout October. In addition, visitors can peruse 1,000 illuminated Jack-o-’Lanterns from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26 through Sunday, Oct. 29. More than 1,000 hand-carved-pumpkins, some as large as 150 pounds, will light up the night at the gardens, and there will be fun activities and refreshments to enjoy. Meanwhile, Morton feels like it could be farther than the short half-hour commute from the city: in a good way. There are beautiful trails to walk through, as well as wetlands and gardens to see.
