A New Year’s Eve Guide: Things to do in Chicago

  |     |   Lifestyle

The time is coming up fast to dust off those running shoes, pull those workout clothes out, and start thinking about other ways to make 2018 the best year yet.

Of course, all of that starts on New Year’s Eve, when all over Chicago people are celebrating fresh starts and new beginnings.

With its elegant rooftop parties, inspired fireworks displays and epic gatherings all over town, options abound or every kind of party animal.

Here are a few of our favorite ideas for ringing in the new year in the Medical District area:

Go people watching on Rush Street: Few NYE scenes are likely to draw as diverse a crowd as the scene at Rush Street. Known for its nightclubs and hotels, the Rush Street area brings together people from all walks of life. It’s a people watcher’s paradise of inexpensive (or potentially free) entertainment.

Gaze at the sky (from above or below): Weather permitting, the Chicago skyline offers a show more all-encompassing than many realize on NYE. In addition to two fireworks displays launched from Navy Pier, Willis Tower boasts one of the city’s most amazing views. See the fireworks from above, or simply gaze down at all the craziness along the Magnificent Mile below.

Pick a party (or two): All over town, party-goers will enjoy feasts, music, and all sorts of other festivities as they countdown to the new year. Enjoy the scene on rooftops like Raised or the beloved ROOF on theWIT Monte Carlo NYE Bash. Dance the night away to the sound of The Suicide Machines at Reggies Rock Club. Or enjoy a bit of networking at the Chicago Social NYE Party. Whatever you decide, be sure to allow plenty of time to arrive as parking, taxis and buses will be going at a premium that evening.

Enjoy a cozy night in: An estimated 40 million people preferred to stay in instead of hitting the NYE scene in Britain last year, according to a news report. And what’s not to love about that idea? Instead of fighting crowds and paying double for certain food choices, cook a meal with loved ones and do it up from the comfort of your living room where pajamas are as welcome as ball gowns.
