Three Ways to Embrace the Winter Weather in Chicago

  |     |   Lifestyle

Most Chicagoans know the snow and cold weather comes down to one thing: it’s all a matter of perspective. When it gets below 40 degrees in November, most of us grab out our winter coats, boots, hats, mittens and sweaters.

And when it gets above 40 degrees in January, we dust off our flip flops.

That might be an exaggeration, but 40 has the ability to feel like a heat wave after what has admittedly been a frigid winter season of late.

The good news is there is plenty to do in the Chicago area to stay busy and keep warm.

Here are a few of our favorite ideas:

Take it in kid-like stride

Perspective comes into play here as well. Watching the snowfall can be a magical thing all its own, but there’s something about being a kid again that makes winter weather a bit more appealing. It doesn’t matter to a four-year-old whether it’s -7 degrees outside.

To them, it’s the best day ever.

We adults can afford to take a page out of that book from time to time, within reason of course. It could be as simple as pausing to watch the snow come down or trying to catch a snowflake on your tongue. Take a brisk walk. Build a snowman. And when you come inside, grab a cup of cocoa just like you did when you were little.

Be a tourist in Chicago

Go take a cheesy photo with The Bean. Take a day to explore some of Chicago’s museums. The Adler Planetarium & Astronomy Museum and The Field Museum always have something new to see, or if you’re spending time with littles, try out the Shedd Aquarium.

Browse the shops at Navy Pier for a few hours. Visit the indoor animals at the Lincoln Park Zoo. Whatever you do, see the city for what is is: an incredibly diverse offering of all sorts of entertainment possibilities.

Find ways to be creative inside

There’s a lot to be said for do-it-yourself time during winters in Illinois. Whether you’re making some personalized gifts for a co-worker or decorating Valentine’s Day cards with kiddos, there’s plenty to be said for a little time indoors.

It’s a great time to pause and take a little time for yourself at the end of a long day. Work out, sit by the fireplace, and read a book. That all sounds like a recipe for a fabulous winter’s night in.

Best of all, you can do all of these things at the home we call Scio. Exercise in our fitness center and enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee by the fireplace in your cozy apartment home afterward. Want to do that day trip around Chicago? We’re a stone’s throw from downtown.
